"Best Catch" sponging technique with glycerin

I was perusing a few Facebook posts this morning and saw a new sponging technique that I want to share with you, using glycerin!  It makes the sponging of inks on the card stock go so much smoother.

I had been wanting to try a outdoor scene with the "Best Catch" bundle*, from the 2019 Occasions catalog and thought, why not kills to birds with one stone!

I put together a little video, showing how to do the glycerin sponging while making this card.

I used 3 different stamp sets,

  • "Best Catch", "Rooted in Nature" & "High Tide".
  • I used the "Best Catch" coordinating Framelits "Catch of the Day" and also the new
  • "Rectangular Stitched Framelits", also available in the 2019 Occasions catalog.

DIMENSIONS:

Whisper White card stock:

  • 8-1/2" x 5-1/2", scored at 4-1/4", card base
  • 4" x 5-1/4" sponged card layer
  • 2" x 3-3/4", fisherman
  • 2-1/4" x 2-1/4" fish
  • 1-3/8" x 1-7/8" sentiment
Mossy Meadow card stock:
  • 4-1/8" x 5-5/8"
  • 1-5/8" x 1-3/4" sentiment background layer

"Best Catch" - For You, Dad

I wanted to try the "Best Catch" bundle again but this time with my watercolor pencils.  Yesterday I wasn't sure what kind of fish it was, but, after living in Alaska for 8 years, I thought maybe it looked like a Salmon.  So I Goggled salmon, and tried to make it look like a pink salmon.

I think this one turned out a little better.  I had a little more control with the color and the colors are a little more subtle. The previous card I chose Pumpkin Pie for the underbelly of the fish, this time I used, my favorite, Flirty Flamingo. The rest of the fish is colored in Old Olive.

I wanted to try the fishing fly this time too.  There are so many cool dies and stamps in this set.  I still have to try the fly fisherman in maybe a daytime scene.

You can't really tell but the background layer, in Crumb Cake is actually a piece of DSP from the Tranquil Textures pack and then I ran it through the Big Shot with the Basket Weave embossing folder, to repeat the basket weave in the fish basket.  I hope they come out with a Crumb Cake watercolor pencil, this was a little darker than I wanted.

When I die cut the fish on my first card I didn't pay too much attention to the die, then last night I saw a little cut that I didn't see the first time.  Low and behold there was a cut for one of the fins!  I put two Mini Dimensionals under the fin to make it pop up more, and one layer of Dimensionals on all the die cut pieces.

I also used our new Rectangular Dies from the Occasions catalog, for the backgrounds of the die cut pieces as well as the sentiment. The sentiment is punched out with our Classic Label punch.

The sentiment that I chose, "For You, Dad" would be appropriate for my dad, he loved to fish, but from a boat or an ice house.  He passed, 3 years ago next week so this card will be
available on my Etsy website, just look for Cottage Lane Stamper!  It will make a great birthday  or Father's Day card for the fisherman in your life!

When I made this card last night I did something I've never done before, really dumb.  When I stamped the hat on the inside I decided to re-ink my Crumb Cake and Soft Suede pads.  When I went to re-ink my Soft Suede I grabbed my Early Espresso re-inker!  If you happen to do this, just rinse off your pad under water. Pat it dry and let it dry out.  I left it overnight and then re-inked it this morning.  Since they are water based inks this is a pretty easy fix.

This set is available, as well as the other items in my online store.  Click here to shop.

The Best Catch bundle and Rectangular Dies are in our Occasions catalog , the other items are all in our Annual Catalog.

Best Catch! Great Masculine bundle!

I took a poll on my Facebook Group page (Cottage Lane Stamper and Friends) what they wanted to see next from the new Occasions catalog.  This was their choice, unanimously!  "Best Catch", on page 44 .  The Thinlets include some cute dies, fly fish hooks, smaller fish, some cattails, and fisherman.

The stamps use the new Distinktive stamp process.   "Distinktive stamps create different opacities in a single stamped image for realistic depth and intensity."  They catalog has a blue icon by the stamp set to indicate that it is Distinktive.

Here's the bundle:

Best Catch bundle #150605, $43.50
Save 10% by purchasing the bundle

I CASE'd this from Tracy Gray, who CASE'd it from Shelly Gardner, our co-founder of Stampin' Up!  She displayed it a our November 2018 OnStage conference.

I changed Tracy's up a little, since I didn't have everything that she had, but it's basically the same.  She water colored hers.  I tried that but didn't do as well as she.  So I used my Stampin' Blends, where I had a little bit more control.  I'm no artist!  :-)  I'm going to try using watercolor pencils next time.

I wish I knew what kind of fish this was supposed to be, or maybe it's a generic fish.  I worked at the Minnesota DNR for over 20 years, but not in the Division of Fisheries.  If one of my former coworkers knows, I hope they will let me know.

This card took me a little time, just do to the trial and error of products I used.  I did used the same paper for the fish, basket, hat, etc as Tracy and that was Shimmer paper and stamped with Memento black ink.  I also put a little Wink of Stella on the fish, since fish seem to have an iridescent sparkle to them when you  pull them out of the water.

Here are some other ideas from the catalog.

To purchase this great masculine bundle and get a free pdf, shop Here!  With just $7.00 more you can get something FREE from the Sale-a-Bration catalog, until March 31, 2019.

Have someone, friend/family, who loves to fish this?  This would make a great card for them!

Happy Stampin' and Have a Blessed Day

Geared Up Garage! Birthday

As soon as I saw this in the new Occasions catalog I new that I had to have it.  There are so few masculine card sets that I like.  This one is part of a suite of products, called "Classic Garage".  It's on page 43 of the catalog.

xWhat makes is a Suite instead of a Bundle.  A bundle is the stamp set and coordinating dies or punch.  A suite comes with coordinating DSP (Designer Series Paper), embellishments and ribbon.  Each suite would have different coordinating items.

Classic Garage Suite pg. 43

My son-in-law has a birthday this week and is a car buff so I thought of him when I saw it (even though it looks more like a Mustang than a Camaro, haha, he's a Chevy guy).

I love all the options that the dies have!  Lots of gears, a car emblem,a gasoline can, tool box and car signs.  My only wish is that it had a birthday greeting to go with it, though it does have a Father's Day sentiment. I used the one that says All Geared Up To Celebrate! on the outside and You're a Classic on the inside along with a Happy Birthday from another set.

Classic Garage Bundle #150610

This bundle is available only in the Occasions catalog.  If it should happen to be carried over to the new  Annual Catalog coming out in June, it will not be bundled.  Bundled you save 10%, plus you'd be able to get something FREE from the Sale-a-bration catalog by adding something for a couple dollars more.

Purchase this set from me and I will send you the pdf with the instructions.  To shop click Here!  Don't forget to check out the rest of the suite! If you don't have a demonstrator I hope you will give me the opportunity!

I mailed this one off but I will be making a couple more to sell on Etsy.  I did use some retired DSP on this. I also CASE'd it from Dawn Griffith.

If you have bought this set, I'd love to see your cards!

Happy Stampin!  Have a blessed day!
