Happy Birthday Baby!

Wow, today my oldest grandson turns 10!  Hard to believe.  I've always told him he was my birthday present, he was born a day before my birthday.  He's a wonderful, polite and thoughtful young man, and, as you can tell, I am very proud of him.

Now that he's 10, and moving toward adulthood, I need to adjust my ideas of birthday cards for him.  No more baby cards.  So this is what I came up with.

The blue card base is Night of Navy.  Cut to 11" x 4.25" and scored at 5.5"
The DSP is cut to 5.25" x 4"
The Crushed Curry layer is cut to 5" x 3.75
The white, top layer, is cut to 4.75' x 3.5"

It's made with several stamp sets.  The sentiment and cake are from "Big Day" stamp set, from 2015 Sale-A-Bration (by the way only 10 more days to get in on the FREE products).

The DSP (Designer Series Paper) is retired paper.  The birthday hat is from this years Sale-A-Bration "Hello" stamp set.

The sentiment is stamped in Night of Navy, other colors are Tangelo Twist, and Crushed Curry. The candles are Night of Navy.

I colored the Celebrate banner and Cake and the birthday cake with my Aqua painters, to make the colors a little softer.  With the stamp pad closed squeeze the middle so a little of the ink is on the cover when it is opened.  Then dip the Aqua Painter in the paint and gently color in the stamped sentiment.

The 3/4" Crushed Curry strip across the bottom is embossed with the Confetti embossing folder, using just the edge of the folder.

  • (TIP: make sure when you run your embossing folders through your Big Shot, that the folded edge goes in first.  If the open ends goes in first, you run the risk of eventually breaking your folder at the fold, because of the pressure put on the folder and pushing the pressure towards the fold.)

The inside, which I forgot to take a photo before I sent it off, has the Ice Cream Cone on the right from Sprinkles of life, stamped in Chocolate Chip, with 3 scoops of ice cream. One scoop in white (with sprinkle) for confetti ice cream, on in brown (chocolate)  and pink (strawberry).  I stamped them first with the Sprinkles of Life ice cream stamp in the corresponding colors and then punched them with the coordinating Tree Builder punch.  The left side I stamped "And a little ice cream" from the "Big Day" stamp set.

String Bean is getting increasingly harder to buy for so, this year, I sent him a Birthday Coupon for a date with Grandma.  We're going for lunch, just the two of us, his choice of spot, and then go shopping for his birthday gift.  When I made the date with him today, second grandson had to talk to grandma too, to make sure that he get's his date too!  Too cute.  He'll have to wait, his birthday's not until summer.

My daughter, is very brave, homeschooling all three boys. In her blog she calls them String Bean, #1 because he's very thin; #2, Turbo is 5 years old, they call him Turbo because he's always loved running around in circles in the house, he used to be called "Nascar"; #3 he has been called  Chunky Monkey he is 16 months, he may need a new name now that he's walking he's slimming down.  We'll have to see what she comes up with.

Back to the birthday card. Hope I didn't forget something.  If I did, please let me know.  If you every have any questions or comments I would love to hear from you!

Special Request

A very good friend of mine gave me the honor of making a birthday card for her sister, who turns 75 next month.  She wanted something with birds and flowers, since her sister loves both.  I found a few samples on Pinterest and she like this one, so I CAS'd it. (Copy and Share Everything)

The card is Whisper White, cut to 11" x 4.25", then scored and folded in half.

The background layer is Marina Mist cardstock cut to 4" x 5.25" and run  through my Big Shot with my Tulip (retired) embossing folder.

The small blue floral rectangle in the back, is cut to 2' x 3" and is a scrap piece that I had.

The white layer with the script is also cut 2" x 3", using a script background stamp is inked it in Basic Grey.

Tip: with a large background stamp it is best to ink the stamp upside down.  Lay the stamp rubber side up on the table and ink it pressing the ink pad onto the stamp.  Carefully lay the cardstock on top, take a larger scrap piece of paper and gently lay it on top. Holding the pieces in place carefully rub all over the surface with your hand, then gently lift it off to avoid smearing.

Taking my Bird Builder punch I cut a strip of the same blue cardstock, about 1-1/2" wide and punched out the bird and the wing. The bird was affixed to the white layer with 3 Dimensionals, and then another Dimensional for the wing. A pearl is used for the eye.

With a lighter piece of strip blue cardstock I punch out three leaves from the same Bird Builder punch. I laid these on the white script piece and took a small piece of tape and taped them in place.  You could also use Glue Dots.

I was racking my brain on how to incorporate the 75.  I had mentioned to my friend using metallic, number embellishments, but didn't have anything like that.  So I looked in my stash of stickers that my daughter, Stephanie, gave me.  I tried three different versions, one a small mini punch with black numbers, a banner with silver numbers and then since she liked flowers, I tried one using my Petite Petal punch. Voila! I like the flower one the best.  These numbers were also a little more elegant than the others I tried.

After punching out the flower, I placed the numbers on the flower.

TIP: When placing small items, like pearls, rhinestones, or in this case stickers, I use my Paper Piercer to lift them up and place them.  It's for me it is easier to place them more accurately than using my fingers.

I poked a hole at the top of the flower with my Paper Piercer on my matt, ran some silver thread through the hole.  (Now this idea came to me in the middle of the night and couldn't wait to try it when I woke up). Placing my flower on a silicone mat,  I took my Crystal Effects and, with a gentle hand, ran a line of Crystal Effects around the outside of my flower, and then filled in the middle, making sure that I got it all the way to the edges.  Now comes the hard part, letting it dry all day!  It gives it a lacquered effect.  I really like the way it turned out. How do you like it?

With some blue satin ribbon I wrapped a piece around the top of the blue cardstock and used scotch tape to secure it in back.  I took a smaller piece and made a bow.  I secured the "75" in place with a couple glue dots, one for the thread and one for the "75" emblem.  I  took the bow, placed some pearls around the middle and then used another glue dot to attach this, covering the top of the silver thread.

The blue layer is then attached to the white cardstock with some Snail.

Along the bottom side of the small blue floral square I ran a line of  Pearl Basic Jewels.

Just for You!

This Stampin' Up Thinlet was so popular that I didn't receive my backorder until way after Valentine's day. But the beauty of it, is that it can be used anytime of year.  This card could be for a close friend or wedding.  I was so excited to get it and use it I came up with this.

This Bloomin' Heart Thinlet is available alone or bundled with the Bloomin' Love stamp set.  I bought the bundle, saving 15%. I always buy the bundles, it just gives the you so many more options and ways to be creative

The card is the standard A2 (4.25" x 5.5") size.  The card base is Mint Macaron and the pink background in Pink Pirouette.

I  cut the Mint Macaron to 4-1/8" x 5-1/4. I then used the Bloomin' Heart Thinlet, centered it just a little below the top about 1".

Big Shot Die Brush by Stampin' Up!One thing I haven't received yet (but it is in my next order) is the Big Shot Die Brush that comes with a pad. For these intricate dies it makes it much easier to remove the little pieces in the negative spaces, just place the heart on the pad and run the brush over it a few times and voila! they are removed. (Saves time poking them out one by one)

Then using the Filigree Frame embossing folder (retired) I embossed the Mint Macaron through the Big Shot. (Make sure that you keep the Mint layer right side up when embossing and if you look close the heart does not fit back in the space perfectly, I embossed the wrong side,of course I could have used the debossed side, but I like this side better.)

On the white card base I cut out a square of Pink Pirouette a little larger than the heart opening and used snail to affix it to the card.

I affixed the Mint Macaron to the card using Dimensionals, to the back side where the flowers are.

This Thinlet set also comes with two beautiful little flowers, one a little larger than the other. Using another scrap piece of Pink Pirouette, I cut out two of the larger ones and three of the smaller ones to fit on the heart.  I didn't think of this at the time but if you place the flowers on your Paper Piercing Matt and use the rounded end of your Paper Piercer and gently push the flower down in the middle it will give it a little dimension.

The flowers were then affixed to the heart on the flower spots, using Stampin' Up glue dots and then to give it a little bling I added some small pearls to the center of the flowers.

The banner above the heart is from the Bloomin' Love stamp set, stamped in Memento Black.  The sentiment is from the Teeny Tiny Wishes stamp set. After stamping the banner and the sentiment I cut the banner out by hand.  I then backed the banner with a piece of satin ribbon.

Throw Back Thursday - "Miss You A Latte"

It's Throw Back Thursday!

Do you have those retired sets that you just love?  This is one of mine.  "What's Brewin'"

This card was divinely inspired. (Hehe)  I was in church last night for Lenten services and there was a graphic on the screen of a latte viewed from overhead. The latte had on of those hearts that you get from those gourmet coffee shops. The cup was in a saucer and on the saucer rested some coffee beans scattered around the cup.

Well, try as I might I was not able to recreate what I had in my mind.  In the process I pulled out this retired set and played with it for a while and this is what evolved.

The cups, coffee beans, sentiment and steam from the right cup are from the "What's Brewin'" retired Stampin' Up set.

The spoon, which if you have read a previous post, I love, love, love is from the 2016 Occasions catalog "Cups and Kettle's" Framelit.  I bought this bundled with the "A Nice Cuppa" stamp set.

The doily is also a Throwback to a doily die cut that I purchased a while ago.  Stampin' Up has a similar one, "Darling Doily" Thinlet Die, right now on clearance in the Stampin' Up online store ( http://www.stampinup.com/ECWeb/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=133736 ).  I love being able to create my own doilies in any color that I desire!

The cups I used my Chocolate Chip Stampin' Write Marker and colored the cup right on the stamp.  The "latte" was also colored on the stamp with a Stampin' Write Marker in  "Crumb Cake" from the Neutrals collection. I stamped the cups and then cut them out by hand.  The one in the front is popped out with some "Dimensionals".
  • The doily is cut out of Pink Pirouette card stock.
  • The "steam heart" is cut out of Vanilla cardstock, same as the background layer.
  • The steam on the second cup is stamped in "Tip Top Taupe", stamping off once before stamping on the card.
  • The coffee beans are stamped in "Early Espresso".
  •  The spoon is cut with the die cut from the "Cups and Kettles Framelit".  I have some self-adhesive silver tape from my late husband's garage stash, put it on a piece of scrap cardstock and cut it out on my Big Shot with the spoon die, then smoothed the little pokey holes left on the spoon with my bone folder.
  • The sentiment is also stamped out of "Early Espresso" and cut out with the "Scallop Oval" punch.
  • The card itself is  Chocolate Chip cardstock.

I made a mistake stamping on this card.  Can you find it?

Would love to hear your comments!

All the supplies can be purchased in my store, and as always appreciate  your business.  Love making new stamping friends!
